I’ve been unable to date it – I would think it’s from the early ‘s or earlier. The building is dated with the numbers above the awning between the arches on the first floor. Please excuse the reflections in the pictures. The house is just under 7. There are some small nicks and glaze rubs on high points, the most obvious are on the right front corner of the front awning, and the back right corner of the roof – the tip of the pen is pointing to these. Please see the close up pictures. Tichelaar Makkum mark on the bottom as shown.

As with anything attractive, there are many copies of the famous Delft blue porcelain that have been made over the years. This distinctive blue and white pottery often depicts scenes from Holland, but back in the old days had a more botanical feel, with tiles, spoons, pitchers, and bowls bearing all kinds of designs. Today, many of the Delft pieces most commonly found in stores are of the tourist variety — sold for a quick buck without the true hallmarks of traditional Delftware.
In the s the Dutch explorers brought in wealth and a variety of products for the nation, which made them a world-class trading partner for other European countries. All of these products held up well over long voyages and were soon considered indispensable for the well-to-do in Europe, the Middle East, and even in the Americas. What made Dutch pottery so special was that the tea culture in Europe had not yet evolved and at the time the Dutch were some of the few making teacups and the proper paraphenalia whith which to drink tea.

For centuries the technique of making earthenware covered with a clear or colored glaze had been well known throughout the Middle East and Europe, but by the middle of the fifteenth century, during the early years of the Italian Renaissance, it was the Italian potters who developed the highest skills in the use of polychrome decoration on an opaque white tin glaze. By the end of the century this highly refined tin-glazed earthenware, referred to as maiolica, was being exported to the countries of Western Europe, causing a demand in court circles for Italian potters.
As early as , Italian potters were in Lyons, France, and in Antwerp, which in the sixteenth century became a major center for pottery in the Italian style. In , the fall of Antwerp when the Netherlands revolted against Spain, resulted in a major migration northward, with a generation of potters settling in Middelburg, Rotterdam, Haarlem, Gouda, Utrecht, Amsterdam and Delft. Shortly after , some potters continued north to Friesland, establishing their businesses with workers recruited from the potteries in the western regions of Holland where the techniques of the earthenware industry were best known.
The center of the earthenware industry in Friesland was Harlingen, a town on the coast of the Wadden Sea with a long history of fishing and shipping.

In , Cole sketched his ideas for an extension to the Science School building now the Henry Cole Wing that would include an arcade punctuated by an octagonal tower with an external spiral staircase and a viewing platform. The proposed tower, as well as being a distinctive and imaginative landmark, would be used as a chimney for the boilers in ‘Boilerhouse Yard’ — once a small, slightly over-grown garden nestled between Exhibition Road and the Residences block.
Coal boilers were an unattractive industrial necessity at the time, needed to heat the Museum’s many buildings and galleries. Unfortunately, the Treasury did not approve of the expenditure, so Cole’s vision for Exhibition Road remained unbuilt. Webb explained over-optimistically, as it turned out that the key benefit of his plan was that it would enable visitors to orientate themselves inside the building and get a quick feel for the displays.
This was a clever architectural intervention and an elegant solution to hide the boilerhouse yard, with a solid stone wall below and a graceful colonnade above, which allowed passersby to glimpse the buildings beyond. As the 20th century progressed, the need for the once indispensable boilers disappeared. The screen, however, remained in place even after their removal and continued to restrict the public’s view of the western side of the Museum. During the war years, this section suffered considerable damage.
A report on the devastation stated:. Two powerful bombs hit in the vicinity on Exhibition Road. It has practically wrecked the west side of the Museum. The surface of the masonry was badly knocked about and the Exhibition Road doors were blown in.
